When a short jacket beats a long coat. In the saddle a short jacket stays out of the way, and on the yard it does not catch on gates or drag through mud. You lose the leg coverage a full length coat gives you, which is the trade. If you want both, a lot of people wear a short jacket with a pair of waterproof over trousers.
